In may be hard to believe but, BW2 saga in Pokemon Special (Pokemon Adventures) manga finally did ended, on 17 April of 2020. And yes this happened after XY, ORAS, SM sagas was already completed, and when SS saga did already began (it at chapter 5 now). In all this time BW2 saga was still ongoing! It originally started all the way back in July of 2013, and its not even all that long, just 24 chapters! But its releasing process was very slow, so its only ended just now. Because of how slow it was, normal volumes of Pokemon Special manga almost stooped being released (v52 was released in 2014, v53 was released in 2017, while v54 is planned to be released on may 28 of 2020). While XY\ORAS\SM sagas was released in separate volumes, made just for them. And only now they can finally get release in normal numbered volumes.

What anime to watch for a beginner?
There is over 4100 TV anime series already. And if somebody just started to watch anime, he may be pretty troubled about what to watch. While anime have a number of must watch (or at least must know about) series, which would be good to watch for beginners, lack of knowledge can easily lead them to watching some secondary series instead.
Generally when beginning to watch anime, its better to first watch most popular\best series. One important thing to understand about them, that there is at least 3 groups of popular anime: anime which is popular among normal anime fans, anime which is popular among kids, and anime which is popular only in Japan (and also mostly with kids). So even if some anime is popular in one group, it may be obscure for other group (which is especially true for the last one).
First of all lets look at anime which is popular among normal anime fans. And for convenience sake let's watch at them by genre. Most popular type of anime in this group is shounen series (in theory it means that they are for teens boys, but in practice its means more specific genre with a lot of battles). There is not a lot of series in it, but they tend to be very big, and famous. Most famous examples of them is: Naruto, Bleach, Dragon Ball, One Piece, Hunter x Hunter (and there is also a number of others like Fairy Tail, InuYasha, Katekyou Hitman Reborn!, Yu Yu Hakusho, Kimetsu no Yaiba, and so on). Another famous genre is mecha (giant robots anime). Most famous example of which is: Gundam, Eva, Code Geass (keep in mind, that Gundam is by far biggest mecha anime series, and its consists of many series, some of them are not related to other, Seed\Wing especially recommended to watch). There is also a group of very popular anime series, with strong story plot, which are not belong to such clear cut genre. They are: FullMetal Alchemist, Death Note, Sword Art Online, Shingeki No Kyoujin, Yakusoku no Neverland (last on is not so well known yet, but its on the same level of quality). There is also a number of popular comedy series. Which can be separated in classical type (Ranma, Urusei Yatsura, Slayers) and modern slice of life comedy (Gochuumon wa Usagi Desuka?, Lucky Star, K-ON!, Yuru Yuri, Kiniro Mosaic). As well as other types of series, such as Mahou Shoujo Lyrical Nanoha, Kanon, Little Busters, Love Hina, Gintama. I also would recommend watching of some not so well known, but in my option very good series, such as Hikaru no Go, Black Rock Shooter, Munto, Kokoro Connect, and also .Hack, Kiba, Hayate no Gotoku!, Baka to Test to Shoukanjuu, Yakitate!! Japan, Kantai Collection. It also important to understand, that most popular series, and commonly watched one are different things. While most popular one are mostly major big series (total number of which is not so big), in anime there is a lot more of much more minor series (mostly 1-2 season long). Largely consisting of different types of girls showcase (but not only) kind of series (whichever its love stories, or battle oriented series with girls). But while there is many of them, and they tend to be fine to watch, there is not a lot of masterpiece ones, to recommend. If you want to see some examples of what they like, you can watch such series as: Da Capo, To Love-Ru, Zero no Tsukaima, Shakugan no Shana, Ore no Kanojo to Osananajimi ga Shuraba Sugiru, Kiss X Sis, Goshuushou-sama Ninomiya-kun, Akane-iro ni Somaru Saka, Seikoku no Dragonar, Granblue Fantasy, Erementar Gerad, Haifuri, Those Who Hunt Elves.
As for kids anime, it can be separated to anime targeted at kids in general, and anime for girls. As for general group most popular ones are mostly monsters\card\toys based anime series. Among which most popular ones are Pokemon, Digimon, Yu-Gi-Oh!. But there is also many other like BeyBlade, Bakugan, Battle B-Daman, Duel Masters, Cardfight!! Vanguard, Future Card Buddyfight, Battle Spirits, Rockman EXE, Youkai Watch (Detective Conan is also pretty popular, but its from different genre, and I also would recommend such series as Mahoujin Guru Guru and Chi's Sweet Home). While among girl anime most popular ones are mahou shoujo (magical girls) series. Among which most popular ones are 3 major series made by Toei Animation, which is Sailor Moon, Ojamajo Doremi, Pretty Cure (last one is by far biggest mahou shoujo series) and CardCaptor Sakura (if you like them also take a look at Tokyo Mew Mew, Mermaid Melody, Full Moon Wo Sagashite, Hime-chan no Ribbon, Otogi Jushi Akazukin).
In Japan there is also exist a number of series (aimed at little kids), which traditionally have some of the highest rating among anime, and are happens to be some of the biggest anime series. But while they are well know in Japan, they are also mostly obscure outside of it (so many anime fans did not seen them at all, or even heard of them). They are: Sazae-san (biggest anime series, with about 2500 episodes), Chibi Maruko-chan, Crayon Shin-chan, Doraemon,Nintama Rantarou, Sorike! Anpanman, Ojarumaru, Shimajirou.

How many anime exist?
From appearance of first commercial anime movies in 1917, passed over 100 years! In which amount of anime dramatically expanded. Now days anime exist in the form of TV series, movies, OAV (direct ti video anime), ONA (net animation), and also a number of more minor types (like specials, omake, music video). In order to understand how much anime do exits, its important to look at all of them.
By far biggest part of anime, is consists of TV series (roughly about 90% of anime, running time wise, belongs to it). TV series first appeared in 1961, with release on Instant History (1961-05-01). From which, amount of TV Series was only growing. Only about 70 series did began in 60s, about 200 did began in 70s, about 300 did began in 80s, and over 4000 did began in 90s. So in total from 1961 to 1999 there was about 1000 anime series (with about 15-40 new series per year, in 1970-1995 period). But then amount of anime series, started to grow very quickly. Because of that, in 2000-2009 period, appeared about 1100 anime series! With amount of series by year getting to 100 in 2003, and did not dropped below 100 since than (already reaching to over 170 series by 2006). And it did grow again in the next 10 years. In which, from 2010 to 2019 was appeared about 1900 series! While amount of series per year did reached 200 series (and almost get to 250 in 2016). So in total, amount of anime series did get to over 4100 (containing about 152 thousands episodes)! While this may seems to be huge growth, in reality things was not all that great. Since amount of separate episodes per series, did get smaller along with it (most of series now days, are only running for 1 season).
Second most important type of anime is movies. Which also happens to be the oldest type. Amount of them already get over 1800. Next we have OAV (Original Animated Video). Most of which contain 1-3 episodes (but some have a lot more). Which is separated in normal OAV, and hentai OAV. Normal OAV appeared in 1983, and currently there is over 1500 normal OAV. While hentai OAV appeared in 194, and currently there is over 1200 hentai OAV (which contains about 2700 episodes). Latest type of anime is ONA (Original Net Animation), which appeared only in 2000. And at first was pretty small. With lesser than 100 ONA appeared in 2000-2009 period. But since then it did grown a lot. To over 550 ONA in total. While there is other types of anime, they are too small, too change total amount for much.

Pokemon Images
There is already 8 generations of Pokemon games, that introduced 890 Pokemon (not counting Pokemon from SS DLC). This may be not easy to get know them, especially since each of them have both Japanese and English names. To help with this I did make pictures with all Pokemon by generation, for first 8 generations. By 3 pictures per generation. One with Pokemon names on English, other on Japanese, and one more without names. For example:

For the series of games, as big as Pokemon, even answer on such kind of question is not simple. While there is many Pokemon games, only some of them a truly proper games, while other a minor, and not on par with them. And there is games, which is only partially about Pokemon (like SSB).
